WEST HAM ended their six-match winless league run against Burnley thanks to Mark Noble’s first half goal – easing pressure slightly on boss Slaven Bilic.
The first half was dull despite the hosts’ dominance – and Pedro Obiang hit the post on 36 minutes in the only chance of note until the stroke of half-time when Winston Reid was fouled by Ben Mee.

He stepped up, but his penalty was saved by Tom Heaton, before the Hammers stalwart tucked home the rebound to calm the London Stadium nerves.
Burnley came out after the break a totally different side – and Sam Vokes should have equalised when he inexplicably headed over from eight yards when Darren Randolph parried.
Randolph produced a stunning save from Scott Arfield to maintain the lead as Burnley continued to knock on the door – but they could not score and the Hammers finally celebrated a lucky win.
FACTS, STATS, GOALS & LOLS
- The teams shared an eight-goal thriller in the Premier League in 2009, with West Ham bagging a 5-3 win at Upton Park. But this was a far tighter and cagier affair with both teams potentially embroiled in a relegation fight this season.
- Remembered before the game was West Ham legend Peter Brabrook, who died this week aged 79 after a short illness. He won the 1964 FA Cup win and was an England international who also played for Chelsea and Leyton Orient.
England manager Gareth Southgate was in the crowd – giving Burnley keeper Tom Heaton and Hammers Aaron Cresswell and Michail Antonio the once over.
- On an emotional night, there was also applause around the London Stadium in the 13th minute for young Hammers fan Jack Howard, who passed away a week ago aged 13 after losing his cancer battle. His siblings Callum and Lucy were mascots tonight.
- West Ham were on a six-match winless league run, and the first half in front of their own fans was insipid at best – they dominated play, but had few chances except for Pedro Obiang hitting the post in the 36th minute.
- But Mark Noble calmed nerves on the stroke of half time – just about! His spot-kick after Winston Reid was felled was saved by the ever-impressive Heaton, but he tucked home the rebound for his first goal in 18 games.
- Ref Bobby Madley waved away a good penalty shout when Reid headed the ball onto Clarets defender Michael Keane’s hand. Video replays, trialled in the Club World Cup this week, need to come to the Premier League.
- Burnley’s only away win at West Ham in the last 11 league and cup ties came in the Championship five years ago, while just one of their 17 Premier League points this season has come away from home. Their finishing was poor and they need to sort themselves out away from Turf Moor.
- Hammers keeper Darren Randolph was at fault for a Liverpool goal in the 2-2 draw at Anfield over the weekend – and he looked visibly distraught afterwards. But he is a magnificent shot-stopper and he produced a wonderful one-handed stop to keep out Scott Arfield’s effort.
- Andy Carroll was brilliant in his first start since August, giving the Burnley centre-backs a torrid time – despite the joke that Bruce Springsteen has played more minutes at the Olympic Stadium than the West Ham striker.

WHAT THEY SAID
Mark Noble: “It’s not one of them you’re going to watch on Match Choice, let me tell you!
“We knew they would chuck everything at us in the second half and the boys defender great.
“Darren made a couple of good saves again, but at this stage of the season and where we are, we needed that.”
